![]() While I was never hung up for too long, translating the map to the actual trail in front of you had me occasionally taking a wrong fork in the path. Speaking of navigation: though I’m thankful there’s no giant arrow at the top of the screen pointing me exactly to where I need to go at any given moment, I did find getting around the Two Forks Woods a bit cumbersome at times, particularly near the end. And yet, these same simple actions that are a delightful exploration of your new surroundings at the beginning of the game become almost terrifying as the plot progresses, leading to points where, playing in Henry’s first-person perspective, I was afraid to turn around in the vast, lonely woods. You’ll rappel down cliffsides, climb up rock formations, explore the lookout tower that doubles as your home for the summer, and more. A substantial swath of Two Forks Woods is explorable, with supply caches, unique sights, and even a hidden turtle you can adopt (you’re gonna live with me now, Shelly Duvall!). “Like other so-called “walking simulators,” the gameplay in Firewatch is the story, though at least there’s more to actually do here than in most games within the genre. Not a lot of games can successfully claim that. It’s tense, scary, and funny – sometimes all within a few minutes of each other. In fact, Firewatch’s script, unlike most video games, would also make a fantastic novella that’s every bit as gripping as the game is. The writing here is simply head and shoulders above nearly every other game I’ve ever played. Things get darker – in a figurative as well as a sometimes literal sense – when the teens go missing, and you and Delilah try to piece together the puzzle of their whereabouts while making your own critical (sometimes difficult) decisions. She’s got something to say about almost everything, whether you need advice on how to handle a given situation or you’re just reporting your progress on a task she’s given you, and she’s so engaging that I found myself eager to call about every little thing I came across. It’s a pair of firework-launching teenage girls that set Firewatch’s story in motion, and you can choose to talk to Delilah at almost any time by bringing up your two-way radio. He is fully capable of matching wits with Delilah, who uses humor as a shield for the personal life she doesn’t like discussing as they get to know each other over the course of the summer. Henry – or Hank, as she sometimes defiantly calls him – comes across as a good man at heart, but a flawed one – a man not sure about whether or not to go back to the life he left behind in Boulder, Colorado. “Right from the jump, their relationship feels real, despite the fact that they’re communicating entirely via radio, with no faces on screen to lend emotional cues. Her emotional armor is thick, and she shows the cracks in her personality we’re allowed to see as we play without resorting to being overdramatic. ![]() Henry’s boss – and primary point of human contact for the entire summer – is Delilah. Rookie lookout Henry is given a playful vulnerability you can choose to play him serious or funny, and the performance is up to the task either way. ![]() Firewatch sounds as good as it looks, thanks to a world-class script acted to perfection by its two leads. In fact, only the strange absence of almost any wildlife whatsoever betrays the convincing setting. It is a testament to both Moss and Firewatch’s level designers that, even despite the stylized look, the Two Forks Woods sticks in my mind like a real place: the narrow passage through Thunder Canyon, the serene calm of Jonesy Lake, the comically small size of Pork Pond, and the unexplained mystery of the Medicine Wheel. That allows bold reds, yellows, and oranges to color this fictional Wyoming forest’s beautifully painted scenery (a contribution by renowned illustrator Olly Moss) – all in a comfortable and immersive first-person perspective. The story takes place over the course of an entire summer, with different “days” – which are treated as chapters of the story – playing out at different hours of the day and night. “Once you arrive there, Firewatch’s powerful ambiance takes hold.

This is important because you need to give the driver more time to notice the signal.Įven the most clearly communicated hand signal is more subtle on the road than your signal lights, so it’s important to help other drivers have the best possible opportunity to see and respond to your signal. Try to use this hand signal earlier than you would start braking and hold it the whole time you’re braking if you’re able to. In the other, hold the same position, but make a fist instead of opening your hand.īoth versions are equally valid, and usually equally well understood. There are two variations on this signal – in one you’ll open your left hand so that the palm of your hand is facing the driver behind you. The stopping signal is sticking your left hand out of the car window and pointing it downward to the pavement. But using a stopping hand signal is better than nothing. Since brake lights are a critical safety feature on your car, you shouldn’t drive without them very much. This hand signal is usually the most important and can be used to help signal other drivers if your brake lights go out suddenly. There are three basic hand signals you need to know, and they’re the only ones you’re likely to see on the road.įor practical reasons, turning signals are also used for lane changes, just like signal lights.Īll three signals are done with your left hand out the window. ![]() There are other driver hand signals, but chances are you won’t need them, and other drivers won’t know them if you do need them. Proper hand signals can only be made by the driver, though some people do ask passengers to signal out the other side in some situations.Īs a note, you can signal everything you need by yourself. You’ll need to push your hand through the window of the driver’s side to make them. Let’s get started! What Are Driving Hand Signals?īefore we get into the details, it’s important to make sure you know what we’re talking about.ĭriver hand signals are signs you can make with your hand and forearm out the side. ![]() In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about hand signals, including which hand signals are most important, when you should use them, and when it’s not safe to use them. Hand signals can even be incredibly useful when your signal lights are out, but you need to drive to get a repair, or in other emergencies. Cyclists often use hand signals in addition to the lights on their vehicles, but you can use them as a car or truck driver, too. Note: If a warning sign pops up regarding the master text frames, click OK, ignoring this dialog. Then delete the master text frames on pages 2 through 4. After you’ve inserted your cover, insert four new pages after the cover by clicking the Create New Page icon at the bottom of the Pages panel (Window>Pages). That means either you create the entire image in Photoshop or Illustrator, or you create a separate InDesign document for your cover, lay it out, and File>Place it on this first page. Your first page will actually be your book cover and has to be one piece. Hold down Shift-Command (PC: Shift-Ctrl), click on the page to unlock this frame, and press the Delete (PC: Backspace) key. Also check the Delete Empty Pages box, and click OK.īecause we enabled the Master Text Frame checkbox in the previous step, your first page will have a text frame on it, but we don’t need it. Go to InDesign (PC: Edit)>Preferences>Type and make sure that the Smart Text Reflow and Limit to Master Text Frames checkboxes are enabled. This way as you write your book, InDesign will automatically add new pages as needed. InDesign CS4 introduced Smart Text Reflow, and this is a perfect time to use it. Enable the Facing Pages and Master Text Frame checkboxes in the New Document dialog, and click OK. Therefore, go to File>New>Document to create a new 5.5×8.25″ document. Let’s take a look at the workflow.Īlthough we’re creating an eBook that can be scaled and reflowed to any size the device displays, it’s probably still a good idea to create a document that more closely resembles a book. I created my first iBook for iPad using InDesign CS5. The good news is that they went with the industry standard EPUB format, and the even better news is that InDesign exports EPUBs natively. One of the things I was most intrigued by was the format that Apple chose for their eBooks (iBooks). And if your text source can't make that, you can use a keystroke that you don't use anywhere else in the document (like ∞ or §) and use Find/Change to swap it with a frame break. There’s no denying that the Apple iPad is a popular and successful product. Is your text all in one story? If so, my suggestion to move from the end of one handout to the start of the next with a "frame break" would work. I'm not sure you need to do all of that other stuff. Regarding text flow with master-page text frames, it sounds counterintuitive, but even though the right-side page is the first document page, you should link the out port of the left-master-page text frame to the right-master-page text frame to get them to flow through master frames on the document pages.ĭo you mean you swapped the text frames? If so, that will give you what I'm suggesting (flow from left to right). Let me know if anyone has any better ideas or if I'm missing something! I'm not sure that's the most elegant way to achieve that, but it seems to work. The text flows across each pair of pages, but no further. Then I changed my document to start on page 2, so that the first page is even. I swapped the pages of my master page so the right page is on the left and the left on the right. However, I discovered a way that seems to meet my needs. Since each pair of pages is its own independent handout, I don't want edits on the first handout to overflow and mess with the other handouts. If I turn on "Smart Text Reflow" then text flows from page 1 to page 2, but also from page 2 to page 3 (which I don't want). I'm guessing that InDesign does not otherwise handle text flows to the next spread? If I turn off "Smart Text Reflow" in Type preferences, text does not automatically overflow from page 1 to page 2. I set it up this way, with page 1 of the handouts on the right and page 2 on the left because the first page of the document (and the handout) is on the right. If I turn off facing pages, it seems like only the first page in my master is used. Well, I have facing pages because my layout differs on each side and is based on inner and outer margins. ![]() It would have been fine and dandy if the game simply reconstructed classic episodes and spit them out at gamers to play through but The Simpsons Game goes a step further and actually parodies tons of Hollywood and videogame properties as well. The only thing really missing is a bona fide Treehouse of Horror tribute, though there are elements from the series of Halloween specials throughout the play experience. You'll see such favorites as The Land of Chocolate, Super Happy Fun Fun Homer, Lisa trying to stop lumberjacks from cutting down trees, and several others. ![]() Several of everyone's favorite Simpsons episodes are represented quite effectively. While the plot of the game is functional, the real star of The Simpsons Game is the hilarity that ensues. What's inside the manual? Why it's the guide on how to use the family's all-important powers against their captors, of course! Along the way they'll be pitted against villains from the show, EA higher ups (yes, you read that right), and their creator - in more ways than one. The game brings the cartoon household knowingly into their own videogame when Bart stumbles upon a game manual that has seemingly dropped from the heavens. Heed the call, fans: this game has humor to spare. While the movie didn't turn many heads with its humor, we're happy to report that the game certainly will, thanks to a sense of humor that can only be described as equal to Simpsons episodes of old. Fans were understandably concerned when they heard that the yellow-skinned, four-fingered quartet would be making its way not only into a full-length feature film but also into an EA-made videogame in the same year. Metal Gear Solid, Madden Football, Lord of the Rings, The Sims, Christianity, Mario, Sonic, Grand Theft Auto, and the videogame industry as a whole are just a few of the things that are parodied in The Simpsons Game, where players assume the roles of all four members of the cartoon family that has been invading televisions since 1989. ![]() But most of the people who succeeded in their field suggest others go with a presentation-making method.
